Merauke, Papua


Izakod bekai izakod kai means one heart one destination: to make local people more developed, more prosperous. This slogan was captured on the aircraft -belongs to local government but managed by Merpati Airlines.



This smaller size kangaroo is native of Papua, can be observed at the Wasur National Park.


Cows are used by local people to pull a wooden cart for transporting agricultural commodities.



Recently, modern agriculture was introduced to this region since there are huge land available for agricultural production but shortage of labor in this area. Population density in this region is still very low. Soaring food price at world market has stimulate investors to enter agribusiness.



At some part of the region, irrigation canals have been established. However, some improvement are needed to make the system works.



Newly opened land for agriculture, crops will be grown include sugarcane, rice, and corn.

Office and exhibition building -made of wood- of the Wasur National Park. The building was designed based on common shape and color of 'musamus', except it is proportionally shorter than actual musamus as shown below.



At Wasur National Park, piles of soil built by termites -locally known as 'musamus'- are commonly found. It was reported that this soil pile might reach up to more than 5 meter high. The height of the one shown in this picture is estimated approximately 3 meters.



Merauke is mostly consisted of flat tropical low lands, some are swampy and the rest is flat dryland. Savanna can be found in many places in this region. This flat grassland are used by local people as grazing land for cow and buffalo.



Sunset at Lampusatu Beach of Merauke, Papua. This is one of interesting place to visit in Merauke, especially for sunset lovers, however, coastal line is not covered with nice and clean sand. Part of the sand is mixed with muddy soil. So, best thing to do in this beach is watching the sunset. There is fishermen village nearby, if you interested in observing activities of local people.
